Reader Response 5
I found NPR very interesting because at times it bored me and other times it really interested me. The writing behind the program is very impressive. They pick aspects out of stories that will catch attention and then add some extra stuff on the end to make it more impressive. The order of their stories is also very interesting. One example is a story on pirates attacking a boat in the Mediterranean and then they follow it up with a political story. I believe they do this to catch your attention with a story of danger and excitement and then transfer that excitement the person is feeling and hit them with some political issue. I think the person is more likely to stay interested in the political story if they have just heard a story that draws them in. They may be waiting for that next enticing story so they stick around.
The next thing that was notable about NPR was the way the hosts report the information to the listener. They use a very monotone at times voice and express very little to no emotion while reading parts of a story that would naturally spur an emotion out of a regular person. This can be boring but it is a solid way of delivering a message without conveying ones own personal views.
There is a lot of thought behind what is put into NPR and the order it goes in. They recognize what is important and catchy and what people may hesitate to listen to. So therefore they structure their program in a way that will captivate and hold peoples attention. It held my attention but I soon got bored. I think they need to stick with shorter segments because the minute they talked about something for more than a couple minutes I was bored. They do a good job of trying keep those segments short for the most part.
Project work
I helped do some editing on Nov 16 for a couple hours. We got all of our interviews and b roll in order so it will make it easier to edit later when we get the rest of our stuff for the project. I helped cut out stuff that was just extra and that we didn’t need for the project. I also helped give ideas as to where to put B-Roll and what order the interviews should be in and started to get that fleshed out. We have a solid start to the project.
